Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Researcher PHD Student at UCAM Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia located in Murcia. The Researcher PHD Student main activities will be carried out within the Green and Innovative Technologies for Food, Environment and Bioengineering Research Group (FEnBeT), located at UCAM HiTech, Sport & Health Innovation Hub, Avda. Andres Hernandez Ros 1, Guadalupe de Maciascoque, 31107, Murcia, Spain in alignment with the research line ‘Novel materials and devices for applications in food, environment, and bioengineering,’ led by Prof. Camilo Zamora-Ledezma (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=3p5miFQAAAAJ&hl=en), the primary focus will be on synthesizing customized organic/inorganic nanobiomaterials and biomaterials. These materials will be based on nanocarbon, nanoparticles (metal, magnetic), and bioactive molecules. The goal is to explore their potential applications in the fields of food, environment, and bioengineering.

The summary of the PhD candidate’s tasks would include but not limited to:

§ Research Focus: Synthesizing organic/inorganic nanobiomaterials for applications in food, environment, and bioengineering.

§ Techniques: Employing methods like electrospinning, 3D printing, and dip-coating.

§ Characterizations: Analyzing material properties using microscopy, spectroscopy, and mechanical tests.

§ Biological Studies: Evaluating biomaterials’ effects on cell lines through in vitro and in vivo assays.

§ Bioactivity Assessment: Quantifying hydroxyapatite formation and protein adhesion.

§ Scientific Communication: Writing reports, publishing, and participating in conferences.

The FEnBeT group at a glance

The                                                          FEnBeT                                              group (https://investigacion.ucam.edu/grupos/grupo/tecnologias-verdes-innovadoras-alimentos-me dioambiente-bioingenieria)  emerges   with a             strong emphasis on collaborative and interdisciplinary work, fostering close ties with academia and industry. Comprising a multidisciplinary team integrated by biologists, food technologists, and a physicists specialized in materials sciences, the group aims to reinforce and expand UCAM’s international standing in non-thermal technologies applied to food. This includes fundamental research and innovative applications of pulsed light technology aligned with sustainable development goals, as well to produce tailored multifunctional biomaterials, for food technology, environmental, and bioengineering applications.

Key Objectives of the FEnBeT:

§ Global Leadership: Uphold UCAM’s global leadership in pulsed light technology.

§ Novel Applications: Develop novel applications using pulsed light technology.

§ Exploring Alternatives: Investigate other food-related technologies, such as high-power ultrasound and microwave-assisted compound extraction.

§ Industrial Collaboration: Collaborate on implementing fluid treatment using pulsed light at an industrial level.

§ Photocatalyst Synthesis: Synthesize and characterize photocatalysts for use in the food industry and wastewater contaminant removal.

§ Material Innovation: Create multifunctional materials, biomaterials, and nanomaterials for food technology, environmental, and bioengineering applications.

Job requirements: The PhD student candidates must have:

§ Biomedical Engineering Degree (or related field): Completed a Biomedical Engineering program with a minimum of 300 ECTS or/and

§ Master’s Degree: Holds an M.Sc. degree in Chemistry, Engineering Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, or related fields.

§ Biomaterials Experience: Demonstrated expertise in biomaterials fabrication, physico-chemical characterizations, bioactivity, and biocompatibility. Please attach relevant publications or your master’s thesis.

§ Advanced English Proficiency: Achieved an advanced English level (B/6). Attach your English certification.

§ Recent Graduates: Completed the Biomedical Engineering or M.Sc. degree within the last 5 years.

§ Research Impact: While not compulsory, high-impact factor publications (according to JCR Q1 metrics) are advantageous, especially if you were the first author, cited, or corresponding author.

§ Research Assistant Experience: Prior experience as a research assistant for at least 1 year is beneficial.
