The Arts Faculty of the University of Leuven is seeking to recruit a half-time professor in Music History (1600-1800), Information Studies and Artistic Research. The appointment is for a fixed term of six years.

The successful candidate is expected to lead Artistic Research engaging with the Ton Koopman Library of the partnering Orpheus Institute in Ghent (https://orpheusinstituut.be/en/about-us/library). They must already have made significant contributions to the study of performing arts in the 17th and 18th centuries and to the integration of such research into artistic practice and current library and information science. We are looking for an established scholar who can promote the link with Artistic Researchin Music within the academic environment of Leuven’s Department of Musicology and Faculty of Arts. The appointment is expected to start on September 1, 2024.

The Leuven Department of Musicology is relatively small, but internationally highly ranked, with a broad view on diverse musicological research domains. Located in one of the oldest university cities in the world, the department offers its professors a stimulating context for innovative research as well as autonomy in developing their own fields of interest.

Duties

Research

- to run an innovative and transdisciplinary research group around the Orpheus Institute Ton Koopman Library and integrate such high-profile research in the academic environment of a university
- to develop data infrastructure around the above-mentioned library
- to foster and develop the library in collaboration with partners in Flanders, Belgium, and beyond
- to conduct and facilitate Artistic Research in the domains of 17th- and 18th-century music, exploiting the materials of the Ton Koopman Library
- to seek collaborations with outstanding researchers both nationally and internationally
- to apply for research grants
- to encourage interdisciplinary research, across different faculties
- to present the research group’s work through the organization of workshops, study-days, and conferences
- instigate and develop collaboration and outreach activities addressing a wide range of participants

Teaching

- to supervise students at the master’s and doctoral level
- contribute to a yearly co-taught course on Music and Performance
- every two years, direct a graduate-level seminar on Artistic Researchin Music as it relates to the long baroque period
- every two years, teach an undergraduate-level course on Music History and information retrieval (1600–1800)

Service

Profile

Candidates are expected to:
- hold a PhD in Music or musicology
- have demonstrable experience in the performance and history of 17th- and 18th-century music, library and information sciences, and research infrastructure
- have active experience in the technologies of data mining and information retrieval
- demonstrate ongoing excellence through Artistic Research projects, publications, conference participation, and involvement in international networks
- have experience with fostering research collaborations and leading a research team
- have relevant teaching experience at university level
- demonstrate success in the supervision of master’s and doctoral students and researchers
- have a passion for sharing academic knowledge with a wider public
- to maintain good relations with colleagues both within the university and externally and to integrate into Flemish and Belgian cultural life

Offer

- Half-time appointment for a period of six years
- A salary commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience
- KU Leuven start-up funding of €110,000 if you cannot apply for other substantial research funding upon appointment.
- Practical support in the areas of immigration and administration, housing, childcare, learning Dutch, partner career guidance, etc.

The KU Leuven’s administrative language is Dutch. If, at appointment, you are insufficiently familiar, or entirely unfamiliar, with this language, the KU Leuven offers training that will allow you to take part in administrative meetings, supervise papers in Dutch and teach courses in Dutch. Candidates will be allowed to carry out the responsibilities of the position in English until they achieve the necessary proficiency in Dutch; and candidates without proficiency in English will be given the opportunity to acquire that before beginning.
