We invite an exceptional individual to join us as a University Lecturer, specializing in machine learning in manufacturing with emphasis on manufacturing processes such as laser material processing, thermal spray, additive manufacturing, and process monitoring. This pivotal role is situated within our esteemed Faculty of Technology's Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, offering an unparalleled opportunity to contribute to our ambitious research and teaching vision.

This unique position, starting from 1.5.2024 or as agreed upon and continuing indefinitely, encompasses a dynamic range of responsibilities. You will be instrumental in strengthening our Digital Manufacturing Master's track, working collaboratively with a dedicated team of digital manufacturing professors. Your role will involve spearheading the development of our curriculum, ensuring it remains at the cutting edge of industry and academic standards. You will lead by example, delivering inspiring and insightful teaching in our Master’s courses, with a particular focus on the groundbreaking course “Machine Learning in Manufacturing.” This course explores the transformative potential of machine learning in the manufacturing sector, emphasizing towards varied modern and traditional manufacturing technologies such as additive manufacturing, thermal spray, welding, laser processing etc.  

Moreover, your expertise will be pivotal in enhancing the Digital Manufacturing education track in other ongoing courses, guiding by developing complimentary modules on topic areas such as simulation and modeling like: simulation of laser beam-material interaction, CALPHAD simulation for microstructure or phase prediction and residual stress/distortion analysis etc. The following key courses are part of the digital manufacturing Masters track:

  1. Machine learning in manufacturing (to be developed for Autumn 2024 term)
  2. Manufacturing processes in digital manufacturing (ongoing)
  3. 3D printing and additive manufacturing (ongoing)
  4. Advanced surface and coating technology (ongoing)
  5. Advanced additive manufacturing (ongoing)
  6. Materials Engineering in Digital Manufacturing (ongoing)
  7. Digital joining (ongoing)

 

In addition to these teaching duties, you will play a critical role in guiding students through their academic journeys, from Bachelor’s to Doctoral levels, and conducting high-level scientific research. Who we are looking for

Qualifications and Requirements:

The language of instruction in bachelor's studies is Finnish and at the master's level and in postgraduate studies is English. The position of a university lecturer requires fluent English language skills both oral and written.

In this position, knowledge of the Finnish study system and pedagogical studies are considered an advantage. The applicant is expected to show evidence of teaching experience, courses development, and strong evidence of scientific research work in related fields. Theoretical and practical experience of laser based manufacturing and additive manufacturing processes and systems is appreciated. In addition, experience of thermal spraying, sensors, artificial intelligence, mathematical modeling of thermal manufacturing processes and designing the experiments is appreciated.

The qualification requirements of the positions are stated in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure. An appropriate doctoral degree and the ability to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses are required of persons selected for the post of university lecturer. When assessing the merits of the applicants for the post of university lecturer, scholarly work, practical expertise in the field in question, teaching experience and pedagogical training, ability to produce study materials and use various teaching methods in teaching, other teaching merits, and a trial lecture will be taken into account.

When filling a position, one important criterion is how the selected person strengthens the research profile of mechanical engineering. We require expert proficiency and practical experience related to the mechanical engineering program curriculum courses. More specifically the candidate will need to demonstrate the following qualifications:

  1. Proficiency in English, essential for instruction and teaching at the Master’s and postgraduate levels. Finnish language skills and an understanding of the Finnish education system are advantageous.
  2. Demonstrated experience in teaching, course development, and conducting significant research in relevant fields of digital manufacturing.
  3. A doctoral degree in a related field
  4. Practical and theoretical expertise in laser-based manufacturing, additive manufacturing systems, thermal spraying, process monitoring, sensors, and artificial intelligence/machine learning.
  5. A commitment to contributing to the mechanical engineering research profile through expert knowledge and practical experience in curriculum-relevant courses.

Salary details

The salary is in accordance with the University salary system for teaching and research personnel levels 5-7 and in addition a personal work performance component. The total salary will be approximately 3600-4900€/month depending on education and skills of the selected person.

The position is subject to a six-month trial period.
