Job description

We are looking for 1 innovative university lecturer forsmart systems. The task is located at the Faculty of Technology's Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, unit of Mechanical Engineering. The University of Turku is now looking for a university lecturerin the field of smart systemswith the specialization in sensors and monitoring systems to join us. The position will be filled starting from 1.5.2024 or upon mutual agreement; and is valid until further notice.

The position includes duties related to teaching, guiding students, and scientific research. In this position, we are looking for a teaching person to strengthen the teaching of smart systems, where the university lecturer works in close cooperation with the team of the associate professor of smart systems. We actively develop our teaching and train the support staff working on the courses in their duties.

This position includes duties related to teaching in the Smart Systems track of the Master’s Degree Programme in Mechanical Engineering. Duties will include teaching in the following courses:

  • Mechatronics
  • Instrumentation and Data Acquisition
  • Smart Condition Monitoring
  • Hands-on Smart Systems           

 The tasks include supervision and guidance of both bachelor’s and master’s thesis and participation in guidance of doctoral works, development of MSc. programs, research and other tasks set by the employer. The task also includes independent, high-level research, planning and implementation of research projects, and social interaction. Those selected for the positions are expected to be ready to participate in other tasks as well, if necessary.


Who we are looking for

The language of instruction in bachelor's studies is Finnish and at the master's level and in postgraduate studies is English. The position of a university lecturer requires fluent English language skills both oral and written. Finnish language skills (oral and written) is considered as an advantage.

In this position, knowledge of the Finnish study system and pedagogical studies are considered an advantage. The applicant is expected to show evidence of teaching experience, courses development, and strong evidence of scientific research work in related fields. Theoretical and practical experience of instrumentation and monitoring systems is appreciated. In addition, experience of sensors, sensor-fusion, designing sensors, and designing the experiments is appreciated.

The qualification requirements of the positions are stated in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure. An appropriate doctoral degree and the ability to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses are required of persons selected for the post of university lecturer. When assessing the merits of the applicants for the post of university lecturer, scholarly work, practical expertise in the field in question, teaching experience and pedagogical training, ability to produce study materials and use various teaching methods in teaching, other teaching merits, and a trial lecture will be taken into account.

When filling the positions, one important criterion is how the selected person strengthens the research profile of mechanical engineering. We require expert proficiency and practical experience related to the mechanical engineering program curriculum courses.

Salary and trial period

The salary is in accordance with the University salary system for teaching and research personnel levels 5-7 and in addition a personal work performance component. The total salary will be approximately 3600-4900 €/month depending on education and skills of the selected person.

The position is subject to a six-month trial period.
