Description de l'emploi

RESEARCHER PROFILE: Postdoc / R2: PhD holders
RESEARCH FIELD(S)1: Computer Science – Engineering – Information science
MAIN SUB RESEARCH FIELD OR DISCIPLINES1: Robotics, Control theory

JOB /OFFER DESCRIPTION

The position is funded by an ANR grant (Bucolyc project).

Flapping-wing UAVs (FWUAVs) offer many advantages over traditional aircraft or copter. In particular, such drones are highly maneuverable in confined spaces including at fairly high speed (Ndoye et al. 2023, video: https://youtu.be/m3oq2B57iMk ) : such drones consume also much less energy than quadrirotors.

Nonetheless, flapping-wing UAVs are limited in flight endurance and in payload-carrying capabilities, as well as in terms of autonomy.

The idea would be to embed smart system onboard such robotic birds to increase their autonomy.

For example, low-resolution bio-inspired vision (optical flow and familiarity) can help in avoiding obstacles or following surfaces (Expert, Ruffier 2015).

TYPE OF CONTRACT: TEMPORARY / JOB STATUS: FULL TIME / HOURS PER WEEK: 35
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 20/01/2024
ENVISAGED STARTING DATE: 1st April 2024

WHAT WE OFFER:

From 2082.39€ net per month depending on the professional experience.

The postdoc will be based in the bio-robotics Lab which is an example of real transdisciplinary research department. The team’s research efforts and expertise focus on the study of the behavior and the vision system of invertebrates (especially fly and bee), their sensorimotor control feedback loops and the development of bio-inspired robotic platforms.

The postdoc will be working with 3D printers, microelectronics, Arduino (or similar), diverse mechanical tools and mathematical software: the lab facilities also include a mechanical workshop, an electronic workshop and a fully equipped flight arena.

The study will also be carried out in conjunction with XTIM-BionicBird (https://bionicbird.com/, a SME company), also based in Marseille.
