Description de l'emploi

The Leuven Institute for Single-cell OMICS (LISCO) and the Translational Cell and Tissue Research unit of the Department of Imaging and Pathology (faculty of biomedical sciences, Gasthuisberg campus) offer advanced pathological services to all kinds of research groups and pharmaceutical companies, of which histological analysis forms a large part. We recently implemented state-of-the-art multiplex analysis technologies in our platform in which hundreds of biomarkers are analysed on the same tissue section, but the realm of multiplex technologies, also in combination with other analytes (e.g. RNA measurements) keeps on growing. There is a high need to implement and optimise multiomic technologies towards their use in a pathological environment on real world tissue samples. We are looking for a motivated postdoc-level senior technologist to join our team to optimise, develop and implement state of the art technologies for spatial omics, with an initial focus on integrating protein and RNA based readouts.

Responsibilities

You will be embedded within the LISCO-affiliated Translational Cell and Tissue Research unit headed by Prof. Francesca Bosisio and Prof. Frederik De Smet at KULeuven. There will be a strong focus on Technology Development/practical implementation of new spatial, single-cell multiomic readouts (with an initial focus on integrating protein and RNA based readouts), optimisation and benchmarking of protocols, and finally implemention of their use in a service mode towards the users of our platform. You will have the opportunity to work in a young, dynamic and interdisciplinary team that brings together bio-informaticians, clinicians, pathologists and molecular biologists. Therefore, we offer a full time 2-year postdoc position within our team. The ability to apply for additional fellowship is an additional plus. During this time, you will also receive the chance to strategically shape the future of this exciting domain. You will have a multifaceted role that involves various tasks aimed at advancing and innovating technologies within our field.

More specific tasks are:

  1. Adapting to emerging technologies: Keeping track of and reviewing existing and emerging technologies, identify gaps, and build a foundation for new technology development/implementation. Follow new developments in related fields and incorporating cutting-edge technologies into the research project as appropriate.
  2. Experimental Design: Designing, planning, executing, and analysing experiments to test hypotheses and validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed technology or workflow.
  3. Prototyping: Developing prototypic workflows or proof-of-concept models to demonstrate the practicality and functionality of the technology under investigation.
  4. Data Collection and Analysis: Process the collected data to analyze results and draw conclusions torefine the technology. A close collaboration with our bioinformatics team will be key.
  5. Collaboration: Collaborating with other researchers, both within and outside LISCO, to leverage complementary expertise and resources.
  6. Project Management: Managing the day-to-day aspects of the various research projects, including timelines, budgets, and resources.
  7. Presentation: Presenting research findings at conferences, workshops, and seminars to share knowledge and receive feedback from the scientific community.
  8. Networking: Building a network of contacts within the research community, industry, and other relevant sectors to stay informed about the latest developments and potential collaborations.
  9. Training and Supervision: Mentoring and supervising PhD/postdocs/technicians, or other team members involved in the research project.
  10. Adapting to Emerging Technologies: Overall, a postdoctoral researcher in Technology Development plays a crucial role in advancing scientific knowledge, contributing to technological innovation, and preparing for a career as an independent researcher or industry professional.

Profile

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher with a strong interest in Technology Development and implementation within the field of single-cell profiling. Below are the key attributes and qualifications that would make an ideal candidate:

  1. Educational Background:
    • A Ph.D. in a relevant field such as molecular biology, bioengineering, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, or a closely related discipline within life sciences.
  2. Research Experience:
    • Substantial experience in life science research with a track record of publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
    • Specific experience in Technology Development, instrumentation, or methodological advancements within the life sciences domain.
  3. Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in experimental techniques relevant to life sciences, such as molecular biology techniques, cell culture, bioinformatics, imaging, or other specialized methodologies.
    • Programming skills for tasks like data analysis, algorithm development, or software tools related to life sciences technologies are an nice asset, but ther will be a close collaboration with our bioinformatics team.
    • Familiarity with cutting-edge tools and instrumentation used in life sciences research.
  4. Innovative Thinking:
    • Creativity and the ability to think innovatively to address challenges and develop novel solutions.
    • Problem-solving skills to tackle complex issues related to Technology Development in life sciences.
  5. Collaborative Nature:
    • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment.
    • Experience working in research teams and a willingness to engage in collaborative projects.
  6. Communication Skills:
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills for presenting research findings, writing papers, and effectively communicating with colleagues and collaborators.
  7. Project Management:
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage research projects efficiently, including planning, execution, and reporting.
  8. Adaptability:
    • Flexibility and adaptability to work on diverse projects, embrace new technologies, and pivot research directions as needed.
  9. Passion for Life Sciences:
    • Genuine interest and passion for advancing knowledge in the life sciences, coupled with a commitment to making a positive impact through Technology Development.
  10. Networking:
    • The ability to establish and maintain a network within the broader life sciences research community.
  11. Ethical Considerations:
    • A commitment to conducting research with high ethical standards, especially when working with human subjects, animals, or sensitive data.

Offer

We offer full-time employment within our facility at the KU Leuven Institute for Single-cell OMICS (LISCO) embedded within the department of imaging and pathology. You will work in a stimulating research environment and contribute to smooth group dynamics in collaboration with various postdoctoral researchers, doctoral students and other technical staff. The possibility to extend the initial 2-year contract is in line with our intention for a long-term position but requires a good evaluation after the first and second working year.

The intention is to expand our services for multiplex analysis along the coming years and keep on offering the most novel and state-of-the-art technologies. This position offers the opportunity to become an important key in these developments and to grow with them. KU Leuven is a top university in Europe located in the heart of Leuven, a pleasant city with an international character. Start date: as soon as possible.
