The Department of Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan is one of the largest in the UK; with 85 members of staff and over 1500 students across all levels. We deliver undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy. The Department is both teaching- and research-intensive, with a strong focus on applied, empirical social science. Our success in achieving above sector student satisfaction demonstrates our commitment to excellent, student-centred learning. Our department is home to several research centres, including the Policy Evaluation and Research Unit, the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies, and the Drugs Policy and Social Change unit. We are also nationally recognised for our innovative approach to quantitative methods and data literacy via our Q-Step Centre.  In the REF21 we were rated top 15 for research power in both UoA20 and UoA21; our research is impactful, interdisciplinary and socially engaged.  

About the role:

The Deputy Head of Sociology is a senior academic leadership role within the department.  The role holder will work closely with the Head of Department to shape and lead the strategic direction of the department.  The role holder will additionally oversee the operational priorities of the department, working closely with other members of the department's leadership team.   You will have the leadership skills, ambition and experience to support the development and delivery of the department's strategic objectives and a high commitment to excellence in education and research.  Academic credibility is important. You will have a sustained track record of excellence in research and/or education, combined with excellent skills in team working and collaboration.

This post is at a Reader level; the Deputy Head of Department role is fixed term for three years with the postholder reverting back to a permanent Reader post within the Department at the end of this term.   It is expected that the role holder will maintain an academic profile on one of our two pathways (research or education) commensurate with a Reader level.  The Deputy Head of Department role carries with it a 75% workload allocation and there is an expectation that the post holder would contribute to teaching within the department.  

About you:

Essential Skills:

  • Have a strong academic record and standing in teaching and research.
  • Be experienced in managing the deployment of staffing resources.
  • Have excellent operational knowledge and experience within a HE or comparable setting.
  • Experience of providing leadership, supervision and mentoring to colleagues
  • An in-depth understanding of the subject including recent developments in the field

Desirable:

  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to negotiate effectively, develop, and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Have good diplomatic skills with experience of inspiring others to succeed.
  • Have evidence of, and commitment to, ongoing personal and professional development.
