Ref PAR 2024/104

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Doctoral positionin Marine Geology

The Department of Marine Science (https://www.gu.se/marina-vetenskaper) at the University of Gothenburg has with its broad scientific competence area and its unique infrastructure the most complete environment for marine science and marine education in Sweden. Only a few similar organizations exist in Europe. Through advanced research infrastructure and the clear connection to societies needs and challenges, the department contributes to new solutions for the global challenges surrounding the ocean.

The Department of Marine Science conducts science, education and innovation related to the sea and its resources. The operations are conducted in Gothenburg, at the research stations Kristineberg Center for Marine Science and Innovation and Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, as well as on the research vessel Skagerak. The department has an interdisciplinary width that includes marine biology, marine chemistry, Marine Geology, marine conservation and oceanography, and the research area spans geographically from coast to world ocean. Our scientists and students often have prominent roles in international expeditions, from Antarctica, Arctic, and the vast world ocean, but also work in our newly built laboratories with advanced equipment and complex analyses methods. The department also has a broad education palette, including a bachelor’s program, three master´s programs and a Ph. D. education in the marine domain.

General information about being a Doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg can be found on the university's Doctoral student pages.

Subject area description

A PhD student position is available in our new research group in “Anthropocene Marine Sedimentology“ at the Department of Marine Sciences at Gothenburg University.

Understanding global change and its societal impacts also requires advancing and applying process oriented research in sedimentology in an interdisciplinary approach. We offer one PhD student position to work in two overlapping new research projects funded by the European Union to improve deep sea monitoring and restoration applying state-of-the-art (robotic) technologies and Digital Twins. The PhD project will focus on sensor based monitoring and quantifying natural and anthropogenically induced particle transport in the benthic boundary layer in the Skagerrak (Bratten MPA) and other deep sea locations. These regions experience significant environmental effects from "particle plumes" and require a more comprehensive understanding.

Additional shallow water study sites are present in the Gullmarsfjord at Kristineberg Center. A newly established laboratory on sedimentology as well as two teleoperated seafloor robots are available. The two EU projects “Redress” and “Digi4Eco” will allow intensive collaboration with and training at a total of 35 research institutions around Europe, from Northern Norway to the Eastern Mediterranean.

Duties

The successful candidate will conduct experiments and participate in large-scale laboratory experiments (mesocosms) and/or sea-going expeditions to collect sediments and particles and characterize their hydrodynamic behavior using sensors. Teleoperated robots controlled via WLAN from office computers or research vessels will also be used.  Research and training visits to collaborating institutions and conferences are part of the training. The successful candidate is also expected to author and write scientific publications and a PhD thesis in English.

As a PhD student at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg, the candidate will be expected to work in a small team, have flexibility to adapt to change, commitment to learn new skills, and build excellent data handling and communication skills in oral and written English.

Additionally, the following assignments apply:

  • Produce the doctoral thesis
  • Plan and carry out laboratory experiments, small field campaigns and process and analyze samples
  • Disseminate results in peer-reviewed journals and elsewhere
  • as part of the Swedish research education, the candidate is expected to participate in courses or similar relevant activities (comprising one year of full-time studies)
  • Demonstrate public outreach and engagement activities

Education at third-cycle level comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree.

As part of your employment as a Doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.
