Head of Science & Natural Perils

As Head of Science & Natural Perils, you will be leading a team of experienced scientists, catastrophe modelers and actuaries within AXA XL’s Risk Management team.  The primary focus of the team is to bring expert natural catastrophe knowledge and scientific expertise into the (re)insurance decision making process impacting portfolio aggregation, technical pricing, capital modelling and businessplanning.  The team is responsible for third party catastrophe model evaluation, applied scientific research, nat cat risk-reward analytics, business planning support and leading the Climate Change strategy for risk management.

What will your essential responsibilities include?

·       Responsibility for the AXA XL View of Risk for natural catastrophe risk.  Overseeing the team performing catastrophe model evaluation, peer reviewing analysis, ensuring clear communication of project results, providing strategic input around prioritization of projects, stakeholder engagement and business impacts

·       Supporting the team’s scientists to establish, scope, manage and deliver on projects with external academic collaborators, or internally resourced, such as to deliver business impactful results.  Oversee expenditure to ensure projects are kept within budget

·       Supporting AXA XL’s position as a thought leader with clients and other external parties, particularly in the area of scientific research

·       Building an external network and representing AXA XL within the catastrophe modelling industry and within academic spheres to bring the latest research and developments into AXA XL’s modelling practices, including interacting with catastrophe model vendors.

·       Overseeing and contributing to nat cat risk-reward analysis performed for the reinsurance segment to support capacity allocation decisions

·       Member of Nat Cat Top-Down Business Planning working group and overseeing / contributing to analysis to the top down selection such as Bayesian Credibility analysis

·       Liaising with AXA Group Risk Management on their model development initiatives, proving feedback on behalf of AXA XL and involvement in evaluating Group Internal Cat Models (ICMs)

·       Climate Change Lead for the Risk Management function supporting AXA XL’s strategic objective to meet their climate strategy. This includes chairing Climate Change Risk Working Group, supporting and maintaining a dialogue with the AXA XL Climate team, developing stress testing capabilities, writing the Climate Section for the ORSA, responding to regulatory questionnaires and exercises.

Required Skills and Abilities:

·       Significant experience in (re)insurance industry experience in analytical roles with knowledge and expertise in managing and modelling natural catastrophe risk

·       Robust numeracy and statistical skills

·       Excellent team and people management skills

·       Experience in managing projects and good multi-tasking skills

·       Excellent communications skills, including report writing and ability to give presentations to a variety of stakeholders

·       Ability to build a network with internal and external stakeholders

·       Effective leadership, influencing and negotiation skills
