Manchester Fashion Institute (MFI) has an established reputation within the education sector, we align ourselves with elite fashion schools worldwide. We are uniquely positioned as one the largest specialist fashion providers in UK HE we provide depth and breadth of expertise in our subject. We are looking for a Lecturer in Digital Fashion Design to join our dynamic and growing team. The successful candidate will contribute to the students' educational journey, bringing experience, skills and knowledge to inspire the next generation of fashion talent for an ever-changing industry.

We are looking for a 1.0FTE Lecturer in Digital Fashion Design (Fixed Term Maternity Cover)

12 months running from: 15th April 2024 – 15th April 2025

You will have substantial knowledge and experience of digital fashion design practices working with industry standard pattern cutting and 3D prototyping software such as Browzwear V Stitcher, CLO3D, Optitex, Gerber or Lectra. You will be an expert in your field whose teaching practice is informed by either your industry experience, your expanding body of published research or practice-based research which underpins innovative approaches to digital design and product development.

Drawing on your experience/industry contacts, you will support students to develop enhanced digital skills with real-world applications and aligned to the ongoing digitisation of the fashion industry. You will deliver creative workshops that build knowledge and confidence in Digital design whilst contextualising the use and value of technologies in relation to career readiness.

The successful candidate is expected to undertake their own research or be in a position to apply their current Digital Fashion practice to existing academic research or knowledge exchange frameworks within the University. We encourage and promote research activity concerned with the ‘thinking', ‘doing' and ‘making' of fashion that engages with the real world and current theoretical, social, digital or cultural contexts. 

The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the research and/or knowledge exchange activities of the department for example by producing high quality research outputs and developing funding bids OR demonstrate an interest in developing expertise and innovation in the delivery of teaching and/or student experience. 

About you:

Essential Skills:

  • Experience of teaching Fashion Design in Higher Education
  • A good first degree together with a PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent qualifications.
  • You will have substantial experience working with cutting-edge pattern-cutting and 3D prototyping technologies plus a future facing skillset that reflects the digital practices of contemporary fashion industries.

Desirable:

  • A PGCE, Certificate of Education, PGCLTHE or membership of the Higher Education Academy (or commitment to obtain within three years of appointment).
  • Membership of relevant professional bodies, demonstrating professional standing.
  • Successfully publish results of research to the REF, in peer reviewed journals or monographs, or publish/exhibit professional practice

In some circumstances, we will consider applicants who do not have these qualifications but are committed to obtaining them and have equivalent significant attainment in their professional field.
