and head of a scientific division at the Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt und Energie gGmbH

Position

This is a joint position in accordance with the “Jülich model” for a university professorship at the School of Economics at the University of Wuppertal, Schumpeter School of Business and Economics, and head of the Division of Future Energy and Industry Systems at the Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt und Energie gGmbH, a leading sustainability and transformation research institute. The division currently employs around 60 staff members working in four closely related research units: Sectors and Technologies, Systems and Infrastructures, Structural Change and Innovation, and International Energy Transitions.

Research focus

The division’s research focuses on describing and analysing transformation pathways for the power and Industrial system using various methods of system analysis as well as economic and social methods. As part of a holistic approach, the division analyses scenarios, assesses certain technologies, and develops and evaluates economic conditions required for implementation. The division also analyses structural change associated with the Transformation Processes. The work is highly interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary and covers regional, national and international issues. The division aims to provide target, system and transformation knowledge.

It is well-funded and frequently carries out joint projects with universities and other research institutes. Funding is mainly provided by the EU, various German federal ministries (most notably the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV)), and the German federal states (in particular North Rhine-Westphalia). The division also carries out projects for international organisations, industrial companies, associations and public sector clients.

Your tasks

  • You will continuously develop the division’s research agenda and acquisition strategy together with the heads of the research units.
  • You will take responsibility for the scientific and economic success of the division.
  • You will represent the division in the research community, politics, business and society as well as in internal and external committees.
  • You will help increase the visibility of the institute at both national and international levels (e.g., via your own networks).
  • You will incorporate knowledge gained from research projects into teaching, particularly into the “Sustainability Management” master degree programme at the University of Wuppertal (you will teach 2 hours per week per semester).
  • You will help promote young researchers and the development of academic staff.
  • You will supervise doctoral candidates and master’s students.

Your profile

  • You have a German diploma (Diplomstudium) or master’s degree in economics and/or engineering or related fields.
  • You meet the other employment requirements laid out in section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia, i. e., special aptitude for academic work, usually demonstrated by the quality of your doctorate and academic achievements beyond a doctorate; and teaching aptitude, demonstrated by appropriate training or, in exceptional cases, determined during the appointment procedure.
  • You have in-depth expertise in the field of Energy and Industrial transformation at the interface between technical, economic, structural, political, regulatory and social challenges.
  • You have many years of expertise in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research at national and international levels, reflected in scientific publications in prestigious journals that are particularly relevant to the field.
  • You have comprehensive knowledge of scientific methods in the field of sustainability and transformation research.
  • You have several years of experience in third-party funded project acquisition, project management and coordination as well as supervising (larger) project teams and research associations.
  • You can manage large organisational units (proven leadership experience and management skills).
  • You can work in a team and prefer a cooperative management style.
  • You can communicate fluently in both German and English (written and spoken).
