YOUR TASKS

As a scientific and project assistant within the VEG-i-TEC research group, you will work on various ongoing and forthcoming research and service initiatives. These projects are integral to the overarching objectives of the VEG-i-TEC framework, with a focus on the processing of potatoes and vegetables, as well as the evaluation and implementation of pioneering concepts within this domain. You will come into contact with the diverse array of pilot plants utilized for both for food processing and water treatment. Besides operating/executing specific pilot projects, you will play a pivotal role in supporting further expansions and the implementation of novel sensor technologies.

Your responsibilities will encompass the development and translation of research plans into actionable experimental strategies, which you will then execute. This may entail working within a laboratory setting to analyze samples and conduct specialized experiments. Furthermore, you will liaise with various research groups within UGent and collaborate closely with industry partners involved in the projects. Results and data obtained will be meticulously processed, documented in interim or final reports, and disseminated to relevant stakeholders in coordination with your supervisor.

Concrete responsibilities

  • Translate projects into experimental plans and oversee (pilot) trials.
  • Execution of the project tasks, including operation of machinery, sanitation procedures, and sample collection, both in pilot infrastructure and laboratory environments.
  • Compile and present research findings, facilitating communication and necessary adjustments in consultation with management and participating companies.
  • Building up experience as a (food) technology specialist within the VEG-i-TEC pilot infrastructure.
  • Consult relevant literature to support and contextualize research outcomes and experimental trial designs.
  • Developing specifications and procurement documentation for expanding existing infrastructure.
  • Communicate results (internally and externally) through scientific reports and client/company presentations.
  • Provide ongoing support in coordinating concurrent projects.
  • Offer general support for VEG-i-TEC infrastructure with opportunities for individual contribution and innovation.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in (applied) engineering science or Bioengineering related to environmental technology, bioprocess technology, food (technology) and/or chemistry. The candidate is expected to hold the relevant degree at the time of employment.
  • Minimum experience in one of the following disciplines: water technology, food technology. Experience in multiple domains is a plus
  • Interest in sensors and big data is a plus
  • You have excellent laboratory skills. You are further motivated and possess a hands-on mentality with a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
  • You are driven and enthusiastic with a passion for research and innovation
  • You know how to function within an (international) team.
  • In function of specific experiments you can be flexible with regard to work content and time schedules.
  • You have excellent Dutch and/or English language skills, both written and oral. You can use these for both oral presentations and written reports (to companies as well as within a scientific context).

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a fixed-term contract for a period of 6 months, extension is possible. Your contract will start on 1/03/2024 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate).  Click here for more information about our salary scales.
