We currently have the exciting opportunity for a Trading Underwriter to join our Travel department based in Redhill, Surrey. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to develop and maintain a framework for the production and maintenance of pricing models for underwritten businesses within the travel industry. This role is being offered on a hybrid contract and attracts a base salary up to 50k depending on experience. 

As a Trading Underwriter, you will performance manage key clients and deliver loss-ration targets to them. In addition to this, you will implement and maintain a data management framework and set of methodologies and operating models that will aid in the identification of key drivers and trends in the claim costs of underwritten products. This framework will also facilitate collaboration with key commercial stakeholders and will enable the generation and delivery of relevant solutions and recommendations.

What You'll Be Doing:

1. Build and evolve pricing models for business lines currently including:

  • Travel Insurance
  • Consumer Electronics
  • Car Hire Excess

2. Provide pricing for new business quotes and renewals

  • Help build product proposals based on client requirements and calculate rates
  • Ensure rates are signed-off within local and Group rules and within the set Group underwriting risk framework
  • Support business development for AXA Partners in the UK and Ireland for all travel products: from services to reinsurance.
  • Deliver offers and solutions that meet clients’ needs and that complies with local regulation, market practices and AXA Group governance/target profitability. Offers include product design, pricing and profitability analysis.

3. Work with the sales and commercial teams to develop new products

  • Work with the commercial and finance teams to best manage the balance of risk and opportunity for new products

4. Review pricing proposals submitted by broker partners

  • Ensure rates are set within agreed commercial parameters and Group underwriting rules
  • Validate frequency and cost assumptions provided by the external partner

5. Identify and measure the risk drivers for each product

  • Detailed analysis and assessment of performance of specified schemes within the UK portfolio. Ongoing monitoring and pro-active management of issues working with the wider Underwriting and Product Development team and the Commercial business. Overall, deliver the target loss ratio for all schemes
  • Use claim data to identify key factors influencing product profitability
  • Report to senior managers any material changes in products’ claims behaviour and make recommendations for changes
  • Ensure data is being received correctly from third parties, is validated, stored and maintained appropriately with AXA Travel systems and used effectively by other aspects of the wider business

Your Profile

What You'll Need:

  • Strong underwriting risk assessment and market knowledge
  • Strong numerical skills
  • Ability to collect and analyse underwriting performance to identify issues with the data and work with Finance, IT and Underwriting teams
  • Understand the underlying of coast accounting figures and financial KPIs being used in pricing
  • Proven track record of achieving product targets within a financial service environment
  • Detailed understanding of the compliance and regulatory landscape
  • High standard of ability in MS Excel with MS Access desirable
  • Strong collaboration / interpersonal skills, with excellent presentation skills
  • Self-motivated, able to plan and prioritise workload in order to achieve deadlines
  • The candidate must have ability and willingness to take complex business requirements and progress them through analysis, development and final model creation
  • Ability to manage priorities and take a customer and solution-oriented approach
  • The ability to develop business cases and manage concepts through to successful launch

Added Bonus If You Have:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ underwriting experience underwriting travel products
