Faculty of Humanities, University of Turku invites applications for a position of contract-based, fixed term University Lecturer in English for 1.8.2024–31.7.2025.

The Department of English is part of the School of Languages and Translation Studies (SLTS), an international teaching and research centre. The areas of strength of the Department of English are discourse linguistics, historical linguistics and philology, postcolonial literary studies, second language learning, and translation studies.

Job description

The job of University Lecturer involves

  • teaching in linguistics on MA (advanced studies) and BA (basic and intermediate studies) levels especially in discourse linguistics
  • thesis supervision
  • other teaching in the department and in the degree programmes of the School
  • academic advising of students
  • independent scientific research and preparation of applications for research funding
  • participation in curriculum and research development, student admission process, and other administrative duties

The eligibility criteria for prospective applicants are defined in the University of Turku’s rules of procedure.

In accordance with the eligibility criteria for University Lecturer, the applicant should have

  • an applicable doctoral degree
  • ability to give research based teaching
  • ability for thesis supervision

Successful performance in the post of University Lecturer requires

  • excellent proficiency in English
  • excellent interaction skills
  • experience in university level of teaching in English as major subject

The person to be recruited is expected also to

  • have strong evidence of research after gaining the doctoral degree
  • have an ambitions research plan with a proven link to the research profile of the Department and the School

When assessing the merits of the applicants we will take into account

  • scientific work
  • practical familiarity in the field of the task
  • teaching experience and pedagogical training
  • the ability to produce learning material
  • other merits in teaching

Salary and trial period

The salary for the position of University Lecturer is determined on the basis of job demand assessment levels 5–7, so the job demand component would be 3213–4320 €/month. There is an additional component based on personal performance that is at least 6% of the job demand component. The salary is in the beginning of the employment typically approximately 4,100 €/month. The salary will be specified and negotiated when preparing the employment contract.

The position has a trial period of six (6) months.
