The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Turku invites applications for the position of University Teacher in German at the Department of German in the School of Languages and Translation Studies. The position will be filled on a permanent basis beginning on 1 August 2024.

The Department of German is part of the School of Languages and Translation Studies. The School is an active, diverse and international centre for language study education and research. Job description

The role of a University Teacher involves teaching and supervising German language courses both in bachelor’s and master’s level studies. The University Teacher is responsible for teaching language skills, specialised courses at BA and MA level and Finnish-German translation communication. The post also involves supervising and reviewing BA and MA theses, thus requiring proficiency at a native speaker level in German and a good knowledge of Finnish.

In addition, the University Teacher also has extensive responsibility for study guidance, student admissions and research. In terms of research, the German language department is involved in German language and culture and translation studies, with a particular focus on contemporary German language and culture. The research profile of the post includes areas such as language learning and teaching (especially German as a foreign and/or second language), digital linguistics, multilingualism and/or multilingual translation communication.

In accordance to the eligibility criteria for University Teacher, the applicant should have

  • an applicable higher university degree
  • good teaching skills

Successful performance in the post of University Teacher requires

  • native speaker proficiency level in German
  • fluency in Finnish
  • experience in university level teaching of German
  • ability to teach Finnish-German translation

Salary and trial period

The salary for the position is determined on the basis of job demand assessment levels 4–6 of the university salary system for teaching and research personnel, where the task-specific salary component is between € 2775–3745 per month. A component that is based on personal performance is also paid in addition to the task-specific salary, and this component is min. 6 % of the task-specific salary. The salary will in the beginning of the employment be approximately 3530 €/month.

The position has a trial period of six (6) months.
