Job Purpose

The GRM P&C CAT Risk Management team (21 FTE) which is organized in three excellence centers (CAT Data Analytics & Modeling, Accumulation & Nat Cat Pricing and Reinsurance) are primarily in charge of delivering the annual CAT modeling process for AXA’s Internal Model under the Solvency II framework. The CAT modelling process has strong strategic and operational impacts since it feeds AXA Economic Capital internal model, the Economic Combined Ratio and NAT CAT budget calculations which drives the earnings and the solvency position of AXA Group and determines adequate levels of reinsurance needs, which may boost or hinder profitability. Going beyond the use of external solutions, AXA Group develops its own suite of CAT models. The models are nested in a global and robust workflow, largely automated and auditable. In addition, leveraging this Group knowledge and expertise for the business, the team has been developing actuarial frameworks and underwriting solutions to provide technical pricings, alert and assess live event impacts across the world.

Its missions are structured in two main axes:

Internal model development

The NAT CAT engineer provides scientific support in the building of our internal cat model. She/He will work on the development and the assessment of flood internal cat model from the hazard modelling to the loss estimation.

The NAT CAT engineer support the analysis of the NatCat risk evolution of AXA P&C entities.

INTERNAT CAL MODEL DEVELOPMENT

The NAT CAT engineer will mainly work on the European Flood (EUFL) model delivery for the REN2025 process. She/He occasionally will be in contact with the project's scientific entities and partners. 

CAT PROCESS

She/He exchanges with the AXA local departments, Group analysts, CededRe Client executives and external providers (Brokers).

Context & Major Challenges

• Understand the claims data provided by the entities.The Nat Cat engineer must understand the assumptions behind the data provided by the entity (financial conditions, perils, etc.), and be able to analyze and exploit these data thanks to its analytical skills

•  

  Understand the modelling methods implemented. The Nat Cat engineer must be able to handle models developed in-house thanks to its programming skills and understand model hypotheses with its scientific background.

•  

  Ensuring the quality of its work.The Nat Cat engineer must ensure that its work meets the quality criteria set by governance: documentation, code versioning, etc.
• CAT Process: The annual Nat Cat process involves the recovery, the transfer, and the modelling of several GOs of data during a restricted period. The Nat Cat process requires an understanding of the feature of each entity and to understand the evolution and impact of their portfolio.

Key accountabilities

• Contribute to the internal cat model development.
  • Integrate the claims data from entities to validate our hazard approach and improve our vulnerabilities curves.
  • Define a methodology to benchmark and validate the data provided by external providers.
  • Benchmark the internal cat models with the external-market software (AIR, RMS).
  • Participate in knowledge sharing by producing reproducible and comprehensible processes.
• Cat analysis delivery for the STEC, Risk Appetite and Reinsurance process.
  • Assess, analyze, and deliver the CAT risk modeling risk to AXA entities and CededRe.
  • Support the AXA entities all along the process. 

Education

• Engineering or master’s degree in applied mathematics, physics, hydrology.

Technical & Soft Skills

• Strong R and Python programming skills and willingness to write clean, reusable code.
• Experience with writing software documentation (e.g., using Sphinx), version control (e.g., Git).
• Experience with GIS softwares (e.g., QGIS).
• Experience with scientific writing would be a plus.
• Knowledge in meteorology, hydrology and hydraulics a plus.

Communication 

• Ability to popularize and communicate complex results and modeling methodologies to diverse collaborators.
• Motivated by an international and dynamic environment.
• French and Business English – fluent (spoken and written).
• Autonomous and with a strong sense of team spirit.
