Curator/Staff Scientist (m/f/d
(Bacteriophages)

The appointment will be initially for 5 years and is subject to extension based on a positive interim evaluation. The salary level will be TV-L E 14 (depending on qualification and professional experience). The position is offered as full time (39,8 hours per week) and is not appropriate for part time work. Starting date will be as soon as possible.

The position is available in the working group Bacteriophages, which is part of the Department Bioresources for Bioeconomy and Health Research at DSMZ. We are seeking for a highly motivated and talented scientist, who is passionate about exploring phages for their anti-infective potential.

Your tasks:

  • Management and user-oriented development of the DSMZ bacteriophage collection
  • Lead phage isolation efforts, functional assays, characterization and description of novel phages
  • Continuous improvement of techniques for the cultivation, preservation, and molecular taxonomy of microorganisms
  • Supervision of a small team, as well as visiting scientists and students
  • Data administration and customer support
  • Third-party financed research, project management, reporting and publishing
  • Collaboration within and across departments
  • Participation in national and international committees

Your qualification and skills:

  • PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, or comparable discipline
  • Additional medical or infectiological background is an asset
  • Strong expertise in the biology of bacteriophages and experimental background in microbiology with an in depth-knowledge of phage-specific methods
  • Knowledge in the fields of phylogeny and taxonomy is desirable
  • Experience in quality management and in dealing with databases
  • Proof of high-quality research publications as a leading author
  • Very good English in speech and writing, and proficiency in German is expected
  • Experience in biosecurity and biosafety regulations is an advantage
