We are looking for an experienced research data scientist for the Data Engineering team of Estonian Biofoundry at the newly established Institute of Bioengineering, University of Tartu. The major focus of the work will be the implementation of the EC Horizon project “Centre for Digitalisation of Biology Towards the Next-Generation of Biosustainable Products” (Teaming project DIGIBIO, Widening for Excellence). The project is built as a teaming partnership with the Novo Nordisk Foundation Centre for Biosustainability at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Tallinn Technical University.

Work assignments
- Integration, analysis, and visualization of large-scale and diverse data generated through automated genetic technologies and robot-assisted experimental systems using classical statistics and machine learning workflows.
- Systems biology analysis of gene expression, protein synthesis, metabolism, and phenotypic markers, including modeling molecular interaction networks and working with relevant databases (MetaCyc, KEGG).
- Development of molecular biology solutions for next-generation bioproduct technologies in international and interdisciplinary collaboration with teams from the Technical University of Denmark (Novo Nordisk Foundation Centre for Biosustainability) and Tallinn University of Technology.
- Generate and maintain thorough documentation of activities to ensure the transparency and reproducibility of scientific analysis.
Education
A PhD degree within natural and/or computer science.
Work experience
- At least one year of work experience in life science or computer science field.
- International-level research in the specialisation, the volume of which so far is equivalent to at least one doctoral thesis.
- Experience in analyzing scientific data.
- Proficient in command-line usage and skilled in at least one programming language (R, Python, and/or SQL).
- Familiar with software development practices such as version control and CI/CD.
- Experience in high-performance data processing and image analysis is advantageous, as well as knowledge of systems biology tools such as KEGG, Gene Ontology, Cytoscape, iGraph, and others.
Personal qualities
- Excellent organisational and record keeping skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team.
- Good communication skills and the desire to work in an international environment.
Language skills
Very good command of English.

Additional information
The DigiBio project will create a research and technology platform for data-driven disruptive bioengineering solutions to accelerate translation of science to manufacturing of next-generation bioproducts. The platform relies on the generation and analysis of big data through integration of automated genome engineering, phenotype screening, high-throughput analytics, and informatics. The Estonian Biofoundry is a member of the Global Biofoundry Alliance.
