Doctoral Researcher
Starting April 1, 2024 (or as agreed) until March 31, 2028
Tasks and qualifications
We are seeking a Doctoral Researcher to participate in a research project in the field of software engineering and cyber-physical systems. The focus of the work is on AI software engineering. In AI software, state-of-the-art AI technologies are seamless part of the traditional software stack.
Your role as a Doctoral Researcher would be to study the latest foundation model technologies in the context of cyber-physical systems. The tasks involved include investigating the latest machine learning and generative AI technologies, especially (multi-modal) large language models (LLM) and related technologies, such as autonomous agents, vector databases, etc.
Some concrete example topics include but are not limited to:
- Architectures and designs for autonomous entities/systems with physical aspect.
- Automated generation of artifacts for cyber-physical systems.
- Multi-modal AI technologies for cyber-physical systems.
- The role of pretraining, fine-tuning, and model selection in cyber-physical system performance.
- Autonomous AI agents related to physical world’s processes.
- Embodiment of AI (e.g., robotics, autonomous vehicles).
- Physical interfaces for AI–human interaction.
In this position you will become an expert on engineering AI Software for Cyber-Physical Systems. The actual topic will be discussed and evolves during the work.
We expect you to have:
- Technical skills for implementing cyber-physical systems and using AI technologies.
- MSc degree in an applicable scientific field (software engineering, computer science, information technology, machine learning, etc.)
- Experience in software engineering and cyber-physical systems (IoT). Experience in machine learning technologies is preferable.
- Interest in studying and completing a doctoral degree in the Faculty of Information Technology is required.
Previous background for reporting results in scientific publications is not required but is an asset.
The duties, qualification requirements, and language skills of Doctoral Researchers are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations, the Rector's decision on personnel matters, and language skills guidelines. The MSc degree must have been completed before starting the position. The study right for a postgraduate degree required in the position is applied for from the Faculty of Information Technology after selection unless the applicant already has one.

Salary
The salary of a Doctoral Researcher will be determined in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System.
A trial period of six months will be used at the beginning of the employment.
