Result of ServiceOPI - General • A communication and visibility strategy developed to highlight the work and impact of OPI and UNEP’s work on plastics • A wide range of communication, visibility, and knowledge products and materials designed and produced in accordance with the approved UNEP branding to highlight and disseminate the impact and good practices generated for OPI. These include but not limited to: • press releases or social media releases for project-related work and events (as and when required) disseminated online on the webpage and through email newsletters • infographics, factsheets, brochures, and posters (as and when required) • power-point presentations (as and when required) • communication bundle for project events (social media and email invites, media cards, banners, agenda, web content for events) • The OPI webpage (and other related webpages) meticulously curated and consistently updated with pertinent, current, and high-quality content. • Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials, as appropriate. • Support provided for the communication activities of plastics-related events: World Environment Day, INC-4 and INC-5 inter-sessional work on multistakeholder dialogues • Support provided for the ongoing work related to resource mobilisation of the UNEP Plastics Initiative. OPI - Knowledge Management Strategy and Platform • A Knowledge Management and communication strategy aligned with the goals of the plastics initiative developed. • In close coordination with the technical team a user-friendly knowledge platform prototype designed and developed to enhance knowledge sharing, collaboration, and communication among stakeholders involved in the plastics initiative. • Key knowledge resources related to the plastics initiative identified and categorized to regularly update and organize information on the platform. • Engagement with stakeholders facilitated to encourage participation and contributions to the knowledge platform. Based on budget availability, training sessions or workshops organized to familiarize stakeholders with the platform's features and functionalities. • Feedback from potential users and stakeholders collected to make continuous improvements. • A communication plan developed to promote the knowledge platform internally and externally. Various communication channels utilized to raise awareness and encourage participation. OPI - Newsletter • A robust newsletter database system was established and maintained for storing newsletter subscriber information. • An effective newsletter production and distribution plan, including a schedule to ensure the timely delivery of OPI newsletters, developed and implemented. • In close collaboration with the Plastics team, engaging and informative content for the OPI’s newsletter developed, including articles, interviews, updates, and relevant visuals. Newsletter content’s alignment with the OPI’s goals, messaging, and target audience ensured. • To ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to the organization's communication standards, the content of the newsletter edited and proofread. • Timely and effective delivery of OPI newsletters ensured using MDirector or other relevant mail distribution tools. • Engagement metrics and feedback monitored to make continuous improvements. SEA Circular Project • A wide range of communication, visibility, and knowledge products and materials designed and produced in accordance with the approved UNEP branding to highlight and disseminate the progress, impact, and good practices generated for SEA circular project. These include but are not limited to: • Creation of branding, design, intro video, and promo video for SEA of Solutions 2024 events. • Crafting the content for the microsite dedicated to SEA of Solutions 2024. (Homepage, About SoS, Agenda etc.) • Developing souvenirs for the SEA of Solutions event. • Drafting and designing the outcome report for SoS 2024. • Final design and layout of 1-2 technical reports by SEA circular • Preparation of communication packages for project events, encompassing social media and email invites, media cards, greeting cards, banners, agendas, and web content for events such as national consultations, SEA of Solutions 2024, donor review meetings, and the project's final meeting. • Design and layout of Annual Reports for 2023 and 2024, as well as the Final Report for end-of-project reporting • Development of PowerPoint presentations, infographics, fact sheets, brochures, short videos and posters as needed for events like Project Steering Committee meetings, Donor Review Meetings, Regional Coordinators' briefings on plastics, and Regional Knowledge sharing on March 8th, 2024. • Design and layout of 6 or 7 issue briefs covering thematic topics related to INC. • Provide additional design and editing assistance for any event-related materials in which SEA Circular will participate. MEKONG, UNPDF, and EPR Projects • A wide range of communication, visibility, and knowledge products and materials designed and produced in accordance with the approved UNEP branding to highlight and disseminate the progress, impact, and good practices generated for the MEKONG, UNPDF, and EPR projects. These include but are not limited to: • press releases or social media releases for project-related work and events (as and when required) disseminated online on the webpage and through email newsletters • infographics, factsheets, brochures, and posters (as and when required) • power-point presentations (as and when required) • communication bundle for project events (social media and email invites, media cards, banners, agenda, web content for events) OZONE Secretariat • 2 infographics and 1 brochure developed for the phase II of the LCA-based study on key impacts of two selected value chains from the RACHP sector . • 3 graphics/infographics developed for selected knowledge products being developed by the Secretariat (among an online course for the InforMEA platform, virtual atlas of cold chain solutions, and a workshop on life cycle refrigerant management) UNEP FI • Actively participated in online meetings with co-authors of the issue brief on plastic finance. • Expert insights and feedback were provided on draft iterations of infographics, visualization, and layout design to ensure effective communication of the intended information to the target audience. • Infographics designed for the issue brief. • Issue brief designed and produced in a format that aligns with the UNEP publication process including all necessary infographics, visualization, and layout design. Work LocationRemote Expected duration12 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional levels. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division works with international governments and non-governmental organizations, national and local governments, business and industry to develop and implement policies, strategies, and practices that are cleaner and safer, incorporate environmental costs, use natural resources efficiently, reduce pollution and risks for humans and the environment, and enable the implementation of conventions and international agreements. The One Plastics Initiative (OPI), spearheaded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is a comprehensive program designed to streamline and integrate all of UNEP's plastic-related projects, activities, actions, and outcomes. The initiative consolidates all of UNEP's plastic-related projects, activities, actions, and results into a unified program to activate and scale up global, regional, and national actions to tackle the escalating threat of plastic pollution. Rooted in the visionary goal to end global plastic pollution, the initiative aims to lead and implement a system-wide transformation towards a safe circular economy of plastics. The Knowledge Management and Communication Consultant will be responsible for the overall communication strategy of the Initiative, with a particular focus on: (i) the development and implementation of a communication plan, (ii) the creation and dissemination of various physical and digital communication and outreach products and materials in accordance with the communication plan and approved UNEP branding, (iii) the development and delivery of a quarterly newsletter, and (iv) the design and development of a Knowledge Management platform prototype. The project \"Reducing marine litter by addressing the management of the plastic value chain in South-East Asia\" (SEA circular project) is anchored under the One Plastics Initiative and implemented by UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and the Secretariat of the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA), with support from the Government of Sweden. The project aims to reduce marine plastic litter by ensuring that less plastic is wasted in the face of largely inadequate waste management systems in the region. The project “Strengthening Plastic Pollution Management in Asia and the Pacific” (Mekong project) is anchored under the One Plastics Initiative and implemented by UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, with support from the Government of Japan. The project aims to enhance tools and protocols for assessment and monitoring capabilities with the Mekong River Commission (MRC), and to strengthen national and local waste management systems, for plastic pollution management in the Mekong River Basin and in the Pacific Islands. The “UNEP-Norwegian Retailers’ Environment Fund (NREF) partnership on Extended Producer Responsibility” (EPR project) is anchored under the One Plastics Initiative. This collaboration aims to develop global EPR guidelines, operational manuals and supporting toolkits to harmonize EPR approaches under the project entitled: Enhancing National and Local Capacity to Implement Extended Producer Responsibility to Reduce Plastic Pollution and to Improve Resource Efficiency. The project will also provide tailored technical support to selected pilot countries to test and improve their global EPR guidelines, and organize capacity building and dissemination events towards more countries through an EPR helpdesk, to increase their capacity to implement EPR. The project titled “Strengthening national capacities of nine Asia-Pacific countries to address plastic pollution by developing, updating, monitoring and reporting on National Action Plans, in the context of the negotiation for a global agreement” (UNPDF project), funded by the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund, aims to enhance the capacity of the governments in developing and monitoring national action plans, implementing Extended Producer Responsibility, and integrating plastic issues in Common Country Analysis and UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework to reduce plastic pollution. The Consultant will be responsible for creating various digital communication and outreach products and materials for the above-mentioned four projects in accordance with the projects’ communication plans and UNEP’s branding guidelines. The Ozone Secretariat facilitates the global decision-making under the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone layer, its Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and its amendments. Among its duties, the Ozone Secretariat receives, reviews and archives data submitted by parties on the production and consumption of substances controlled under the Montreal Protocol; and provides governments, organizations, and individuals with information on how they can protect the ozone layer and the climate in the sectors where the controlled substances and their substitutes are used. In 2024 the Secretariat will need infographic/graphic design expertise to create compelling visual products to support its work in relation to the Life Cycle Approach and Management and Cold Chains. The Consultant will be responsible for creating and designing infographics, visualizations, and layouts aligned with these specific areas of focus. UNEP Finance Initiative (FI) Secretariat works across the banking, insurance, and investment industries and cross-cutting workstreams that focus on developing and rolling out practical approaches to addressing challenges and mainstreaming solutions in areas including responding to climate change, financing nature-based solutions, tackling pollution & boosting the circular economy, financing the UN Sustainable Development Goals and promoting human rights. UNEP FI is preparing an Issue Brief on plastics finance. The Consultant will also be responsible for the preparation of infographics, visualization, and layout design for this brief. The consultant will work home-based and full-time, under the supervision of the programme officer coordinating the One Plastics Initiative in the Industry and Economy Division. Qualifications/special skillsAdvanced university degree in social sciences, environmental studies, teaching/ training, communication, or a related technical field. - At least 15 years of work experience related to Knowledge Management and/or communication - Proven experience in developing and implementing communication strategies for projects or organizations. - Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to tailor messages for diverse audiences. - Experience in media relations, including press outreach and event coordination. - Experience in using digital communication tools and platforms. - Experience in newsletter creation and dissemination, preferably using mass email programs. - Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to tailor content for diverse audiences. - Familiarity with mass email platforms and their functionalities. - Excellent communication skills in structuring and conveying technical content in non-technical language - Experience working with the United Nations and international organisations LanguagesFluency in English (oral and written) is required.
