Description de l'emploi

The EU aims to break the dependence on Russia on fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to clean energy. Join Luke's RePowerEU project for a PhD on economic modelling of the green transition.

The primary goal of thedoctoral researcher is to examine the economics of green transition in the Finnish energy and forest sectors under the global energy market disruption. The main methodology is energy and forest sector modeling with special interest on general equilibrium and/or regional impacts. The research can concern, for example, (1) the investments into renewable energy, new forest sector products, and hydrogen economy, (2) the impact of possible resource restrictions on future development (e.g., green transition) of energy and forest sectors, (3) the resulting energy system and industry structure and their nationwide economic impacts.

The doctoral researcher will develop sectoral modeling into direction of computable general equilibrium (CGE) models. The models will be developed with an emphasis on the importance of green transition, renewable resources, and policy support. Tasks will start with the identification of suitable models, data and approaches, and the development of a research plan. The aim is to strengthen the expertise of CGE models both in Luke and in Finland.

The doctoral researcher will advance her/his doctoral studies and co-develop and implement the research plan of the project. In addition to the economic modeling, the implementation involves the preparation of scientific articles that will constitute a PhD thesis. Work may be done remotely and on a flexible working time basis.

The doctoral researcher will be part of the Environmental and Resource Economics Group and she/he will also be associated with the Luke doctoral programme. The work is part of the Luke RePowerEU project, and it will be conducted in close collaboration with other doctoral researchers in the project.

The contract is for 2,5 years. The starting date is negotiable (preferably March 2024). The extension of the contract will be subject to progress evaluation, and if granted, will provide funding for an additional period of 1,5 years.

Our expectations of the applicant

We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral researcher with a potential to provide high quality research. The position is suitable for competitive candidates with a good command of quantitative modeling in, e.g., economics, operations research, or applied mathematics. The doctoral researcher should have a master’s degree in a related discipline, and she/he must be eligible for doctoral studies or already enrolled on a doctoral programme at their university.

Success in the role will require knowledge on numerical optimisation and equilibrium problem solving, for example, using GAMS software. The doctoral researcher would also benefit from knowledge of the current and future operating environment and technological solutions in Finnish energy and forest sectors. The ability to work and collaborate in a diverse scientific environment is required. Fluency in written and spoken English and/or Finnish is an asset.

BenefitsOur mobile work model allows you to work in Finland in the location most appropriate for your work. In addition, we provide flexible hours, and as your employment with us continues, long vacations. We offer lunch benefits, as well as sports, culture or commuting support.

For international recruits, we provide a relocation package, which includes concrete support for coming to Finland and Luke (eg. residence permit, various registration procedures, banking and taxation, finding an apartment).

Clarifications

The person selected for the position might need to undergo standard security clearance vetting with the applicant’s consent (Security Clearance Act 726/2014). More detailed information on the procedure and the subject's rights is available at www.supo.fi.
