Description de l'emploi

We are looking for a postdoc to study the interaction between geopolitics and natural resource governance in the green transition context. Fields of science suitable for the task include e.g. political science, environmental policy or future research.

The EU is seeking to cut its dependency on Russian fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to clean energy. To this end, the EU has launched the REPowerEU plan, which is part of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The Recovery and Resilience plan is part of Finland's Sustainable Growth Programme, which accelerates reforms and investments. The Natural Resources Institute Finland's RePower project examines the interaction between global geopolitics and natural resource management as part of the green transition.

Recent years have shown that geopolitical development increasingly conditions the governance and policies on fossil-based but also renewable Natural Resources. Hence, in current geopolitical era the planning and orchestrating green transition in societies needs to adapt to geopolitical realities and align with policies such as the EU’s strategic autonomy, national self-sufficiency, and security of supply. Within this context we seek a postdoctoral researcher who is expected to focus on the interplay between global geopolitics and the governance of Natural Resources in the context of green transition. A researcher would focus on geopolitical drivers and influence on international, national, and regional strategies towards transition to sustainability.

Key responsibilities:
• Conduct comprehensive research and analysis on the Geopolitics of Natural Resources, focusing on Finnish context but in close relation to the EU's strategic objectives regarding self-sufficiency and security of supply.
• Engage with policymakers, industry stakeholders, and academic circles to advocate for informed and sustainable natural resource governance policies which acknowledge geopolitical trends and development.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary research in LUKE to integrate geopolitical analysis into broader discussions on sustainability, economic development, and international relations.
• Participate on drawing a roadmap towards emerging renewable energy systems in Finland from perspective of geopolitical conditions and realities

Our expectations of the applicant

Successfully managing the task requires:
• Doctoral degree in International Relations, Political Science, Environmental Policy, Future studies or a related field.
• Demonstrated expertise in geopolitics, natural resource governance, and policy analysis, with a specific focus on the EU and Finnish contexts.

• Academic proficiency in English is mandatory and Finnish language is considered as an asset.
